[ZeroWaste] May CBJ Solid Waste Planning Update ♻

Here are a few solid waste updates for May 2024:

Waste Characterization Study
On May 20 – 25th, Cascadia Consulting<https://www.cascadiaconsulting.com/> will be in Juneau to perform a waste characterization study at the landfill. To get an idea of what this process looks like, check out this video from CalRecycle<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ROBPdK_jJdw>, California’s Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery. The results of this study will help guide future zero waste initiatives, as well as CBJ’s look into future waste disposal options for our community (more on that below).

We should have a draft report of the findings by the end of June. Once we have a final version, we will share the results with you here and on our website. Stay tuned for future educational events on this topic!

Solid Waste Disposal Options Study
CBJ will be releasing a Request for Proposals (RFP) for a high-level feasibility study of Juneau’s future waste disposal options soon. The study will examine the economic and logistical feasibility of building and operating a new landfill, constructing and operating a waste-to-energy facility, and building a transfer station to ship the community’s waste south to a landfill in the Lower 48. Staff are hopeful that this study will be finished by the end of 2024. Once that study is completed, CBJ staff will begin a public engagement process to share the results with the community and solicit their feedback.

Recycling Center
Earlier this month, the computer system on our recycling baler was destroyed by a power surge. It took staff a little over a week to diagnose, order the replacement part, and fix the issue. However, the center lacks the necessary space to store even a week’s worth of recycled materials - we receive an estimated six to ten 20-yard containers worth of materials each day at the facility! This meant that the recycling center had to be closed during that period. We know that this was an inconvenience for some residents as well as our business community that uses the facility. We appreciate your patience while we worked to remedy the problem.

Spring Cleaning
Finally, we know that many people have a lot of materials to dispose of this time of year. If you have cleaning chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, fertilizer, electronics, paint, or other materials that you’re unsure about putting in the garbage, check out CBJ’s webpage on household hazardous waste disposal here<https://juneau.org/engineering-public-works/recycleworks/hazardous-waste>. If you have leaves, mosses, or grass, consider contacting Juneau Composts!<https://www.juneaucomposts.com/> to have these items composted (fees may apply). Please note that JC does not accept brush or stumps at this time, and the landfill will not accept stumps.
